Mental Fitness for Life and Sport.

Stronger minds. Closer families. Better performance.

Therapy and performance psychology for athletes, parents, and the lives that surround them. Built around the simple truth that what helps you compete also helps you live well.

Dr. Alec Baker, M.A., Psy.D.

Licensed Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Baker has been providing expert psychological support since earning his Master’s and doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Professional Psychology in 2011. Specializing in Sport & Family Issues, his work empowers individuals and families to overcome adversity and reach their full potential by leveraging their strengths and developing mental fitness skills.

Dr. Baker grew up in the Philadelphia area where he was an elite level youth ice hockey player.  He was also a high level youth lacrosse player.  Dr. Baker’s sporting career was ended by injury, but reborn when he began coaching both ice hockey and lacrosse as an adult.

Dr. Baker’s experiences as a coach drew him to the specialty of Sport & Family issues as he recognized the strain that youth sports participation can put on families and the ways that family dynamics impact players’ performance on the playing surface.

Who I Support

Athletes, the families around them, and adults navigating the rest of life.

Athletes & Competitors

Adolescents and adults working through anxiety, depression, identity challenges, performance blocks, the long shadow of injury, the physical and emotional demands of recovery, retirement from their sport, and other major life transitions.

Parents & Families

The people behind the player. Parents trying to do right by their kids, families navigating sport’s demands together, and couples working to stay close while raising young athletes. We can work through parent-athlete dynamics, communication, as well as coparenting (divorced, divorcing, never married).

Adults Outside of Sport

You don’t have to be an athlete for this work to fit. Adults navigating anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, and life transitions are welcome. We can work through anxiety & depression, relationships & transitions, stress, burnout and meaning. Insurance accepted for this service.

What We Do Together

An integrative practice drawing from several schools of thought so the work fits the person, not the other way around.

Individual Therapy

(Ages 12+)

Warm, direct, strengths-based work for anxiety, depression, identity, and life transitions. We process what needs processing — and we problem-solve when problem-solving is what’s called for.

$225/hour session

Performance Psychology

(Athletes & Coaches)

Mental fitness for athletes who want to remove the mental road blocks between them and their best work. Confidence, focus, pre-competition routines, dealing with mistakes, returning from injury.

$225/hour session

Family & Parent Work

(Family, Couples & Coparenting)

For families where a young athlete is at the center — and for parents who want a thinking partner. Includes a coparenting specialty for divorced, divorcing, and never-married parents.

$225/hour session

Outreach & Education

(Teams, Clubs & Schools)

Talks, workshops, and consultation for teams, clubs, and organizations — building the kind of culture where players, parents, and coaches thrive.

My Approach

Integrative & Strengths-Based

My work is integrative. Sometimes we need to process feelings; sometimes we need to make hard choices; sometimes we need a coping skill you can use on Monday. The coach in me shows up, concrete, collaborative, willing to talk solutions, without losing the warmth of a clinical relationship.

Core Values:

Additional Community Services

Beyond the therapy room, I provide education and consultation that helps teams, parents, and coaches build a culture where young athletes thrive. Sports have so much positive to offer and a growing social and psychological cost. Outreach is how I work upstream of the therapy room: helping parents, coaches, and organizations strengthen the culture young athletes actually grow in.

Parents

Workshops on supporting young athletes without sucking the joy out of the experience…for either of you!

Coaches

Training on mental fitness, team culture, and recognizing when a player needs more than a coach.

Organizations

Consultation for clubs, schools, and youth-sport leagues working to build healthier programs.

Coparenting

Through The Coparenting Cooperative of Colorado — Level 1 & 2 classes for parents living apart.

Practical Questions, Honest Answers

Don’t see your question? The 15-minute call is the right place to start.

Do you take insurance?

Yes, I’m in-network with Aetna plans in PA and CO and I work with many clients via insurance. For specialized sport, performance, and family work, I also see clients on a private-pay basis. I do not offer couples or family therapy billed through insurance and unfortunately Aetna does not allow me to provide those services to their members on a private pay basis. We’ll sort out billing specifics on the intro call. All private pay services are $225 per hour. The cost when using insurance is dependent on your specific insurance plan details.

I work with clients ages 12 and up. With adolescents, parents are always considered, and often involved in the treatment in some form. The degree of involvement is something we shape together.

Often, yes. The same lens that helps athletes (strengths, mental fitness, performance under pressure) travels well into other walks of life. If we’re not the right fit, I’ll tell you and help you find someone who is.

Both. Many clients do a mix. We’ll figure out what works for your schedule, your sport, and what you’re working on.

It varies. Some people come in for a focused stretch around a specific challenge; others stay longer as life shifts. The plan is something we set together and revisit honestly. Most clients conclude their primary treatment within 6-9 months.

I provide support for individual coparents who are struggling to adjust to their new reality as well as coparent coaching for coparent teams who need help working through conflict for the benefit of their children. In addition, I provide coparenting education for divorced, divorcing, and never-married parents through The Coparenting Cooperative of Colorado. It’s a separate offering from clinical therapy — happy to point you in the right direction.

Let’s Start with a Conversation

The first step is a free 15-minute call. We’ll talk about what brings you here, whether the fit is right, and what a thoughtful next step looks like whether that is therapy with me, or a referral that makes sense. I respond within two business days.
